DIY at home Acne Facial Treatment

Oh acne, you are the bane of our existence, leaving so many of us with the eternal search for a good acne treatment.  But seriously, didn’t we all think once we tossed our graduation caps in the air, that we would be done with breakouts? Well, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for many, some of us ladies are still living with blemishes well into our 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Before getting to Cara’s suggestion for an effective DIY at home facial for acne treatment, let’s discuss what causes these day ruining monsters (pimples).  Pimples are formed when the pores get clogged with oil and dead skin.  The combination of these two makes a lovely plug that sits in your pore. Naturally, some bacteria gets trapped in there that creates inflammation, creating an attractive red pimple front and center for everyone to see.

Now onto the good stuff, with any acne treatment, the goal is to clear away dead skin via exfoliation, removing excess oil, reducing inflammation and killing the bacteria caused by acne.  Our recommendations for an effective acne treatment do just that! Follow these DIY at home facial steps to achieve clear, acne-free skin:

Step 1: Glyco-10 Exfoliating Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step to clear skin.  Using a Glycolic acid cleanser such as the Glyco-10 will exfoliate to get rid of dead skin and lifts away excess oils.

To use: Work into a foaming lather with water, lightly and thoroughly massage onto skin and, rinse with warm water, then mist with toner.  Use this cleanser both day and night.  Please note that this cleanser is not intended to remove your makeup, do ensure you are removing make before cleansing.  Lastly, ensure that you are using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, as your skin will be more sensitive with the use of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).

Step 2: Pumpkin Heat Exfoliating Mask

To continue the exfoliation that your acne prone skin needs we use an exfoliating mask.  Pumpkin has a small molecular structure, this allows for a much deeper penetration of the skin, providing an enhanced exfoliation.  The heating portion of this mask opens your pores to allow a more effective cleaning.  All of which leave your skin brighter, softer and more even-toned.

To use: Apply Pumpkin Heat Exfoliating Mask all over face, ensuring your skin is dry before applying (avoid eye area).  Once you have applied it to your entire face, continue to massage the mask into your skin until the warming sensation decreases. Leave on 3-5 minutes, allowing the pumpkin, papaya, and pineapple fruit enzymes to do the enzymatic exfoliation. Once your time is up, rinse your face with warm water, then mist with toner. Use this mask 1-2 times per week for optimal results.

Step 3: PureEssence Sensitive Toner Mist

Toning is an underrated step for most, regardless of skin type or skin problems.  When it comes to acne treatment, a toner is essential.  Toner will help to close/shrink your pores, leaving less room for dead skin and oil to accumulate.  Restoring your skin’s PH is also where toner helps; cleansers are typically alkaline due to the nature of soap.  Therefore, toner helps to normalize PH levels so that it doesn’t have to work so hard (creating more oil) to get back to normal. Lastly, a toner assists with keeping your skin hydrated as it is a humectant, meaning it helps to bind moisture to the skin.

To Use: Lightly mist all over your face or put a small amount on a cotton pad and apply to your entire face and neck.  Use a toner after, showers/baths and after cleansing or masking.

Step 4: PhytoMud Pore-Minimizing Mask

This is by far one of our customer favorites; this mask is excellent for all skin types.  Where it comes in handy for acne treatment is with the Bentonite clay.  This clay is extremely useful regarding cleaning out pores and shrinking them, limiting how much dead skin and oil can form inside of the pore.  Bentonite clay helps to control the overproduction of sebum (oil), further eliminating one of the factors in the creation of pimples.  After the PhytoMud Mask, you can expect hydrated, clean and fresh looking skin.

To Use: Apply evenly over face, avoiding your eye area. Leave on for 5 - 10 minutes.  To enhance the effectiveness of the PhytoMud, apply the mask part way through your shower (pat face dry before using) or during a bath. The steam from the bath/shower helps to keep the mask moist therefore allowing it to be active for longer. Rinse with warm water, then mist your face with toner.

Step 5: Glyco-15 Corrective Serum

Going back to one of our primary goals of acne treatment, the goal of exfoliating the skin! To reiterate Glycolic acid assists with the exfoliation of skin, and is best served in a serum as it penetrates your skin much deeper.  With the extended use of a Glyco infused serum, you can slough off the top layer of your skin, revealing brighter, younger-looking skin.  This also assists in helping diminish fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and scarring from acne.  Anti-aging and acne fighting all in one!

To Use: Apply 2-3 pumps lightly all over your face and neck area for a calming and healing effect. Please note that this is a PM use only. Additionally, you must ensure that you are using broad-spectrum sun protection, as your skin will be more sensitive with the use of this product.

Step 6: Revive Eye Gel

Even though an eye care step in this at home facial doesn’t seem that it directly benefit’s acne treatment, we think its essential.  It is an at-home facial that we are after here, that means to treat your whole face in the name of skincare! For this, we recommend our Revive Eye Gel, which will reduce the visible signs of aging around your eyes.  With this eye gel you will experience a cooling effect, and almost instantly you will notice you're under eye area will be tighter and firmer looking.  You can also expect those pesky bags and any puffiness to diminish.

To use: Apply a small amount of gel to your outer eye area working inward.  It is recommended when working with around your eyes that you use a patting motion opposed to a rubbing one due to that skin being more sensitive. Use your eye gel both morning and night for optimal results. To add to the cooling effect, store your gel in your refrigerator.

Step 7: Pure Citrus Day Cream

Moisturizer is a critical step in any skincare routine; moisturizer hydrates your face and locks in your serum.  For acne treatment, we like to use our Pure Citrus Day Cream because it is a light-textured moisturizer that tones and conditions the skin.  With the lemon extract, it further cleanses and purifies the skin, further reducing any bacteria.  Also, containing sage extract, to encourage cell renewal, which further helps fight acne flare-ups.

To use: Apply a small amount of recommended moisturizing cream evenly over entire face and neck and gently massage in. Use both day and night.

Step 8: Daily Solar Guard SPF 25

Suncare…an overlooked, critical part of your skincare routine.  Always use sun care, the last this that you want is sun care damage on top of any other skin concerns that you may be dealing with. Our Daily Solar Guard offers broad-spectrum sun care from both UVA/UVB rays as well as helps to repair previously sun damaged skin.

To use: Evenly apply a small amount over entire face and neck. Reapply as needed.  Use daily.

With any at home care maintenance is crucial to achieving maximum results that you are consistent.  Especially when using new products, you need to give your skin time to adjust. For some products such as serums, you will need a minimum of 3 weeks to start seeing results.  We would also like to note that not all acne treatment recommendations are a one shoe fits all solution.  Visit a Cara salon or spa to speak to a Cara Skin Care specialist to discuss more in-depth treatment options.
