Why does the pH of your skin matter?

In skin care it is often brought up, levelling out the skin's pH, but have you ever wondered why pH of your skin matters?  How does the pH of your skin affect its look and feel?

First, let's discuss what is the pH of your skin.  pH tells us how acid something is, when referring to your skin it is naturally more acidic with a pH level of 4.3 to 5.5.  This is to help it defend itself against any irritants.  To help the skin fight against bacteria or water loss,  there is a natural layer of free fatty acids, lipids and ceramides which is called the acid mantle.  This acid mantle must stay balanced so that it can continue to do its job. When the acid mantle is out of balance your skin is unprotected.

Essentially everything that you put on your skin effects the pH of it, which is why you want to know the pH of the products that you are using. When we are talking about cleansers this is where it is important to factor in your skin type.  An easy way to determine if the cleanser you are using is affecting your acid mantle is to wash your face then see how your skin feels after.  If your skin feels tight and dry, you are definitely stripping your acid mantle and should consider moving to a different cleanser.  After cleansing your face should feel clean and somewhat moisturized. Whether you are using a high or low pH cleanser it is always a good idea to follow up washing with a pH balancing toner to ensure that the balance has been kept.

To sum everything up, the pH of your skin matters because a level pH effects the skins ability to protects itself.  Which ultimately affects how your skin looks and feels if you end up using the wrong products your skin can end up irritated and full of acne. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are stripping your skin with harsh cleansers your skin will go into overdrive producing oil, resulting in clogged pore and acne.
